BLL – Committed to quality food
Safe, healthy, plenty of variety, delicious and affordable – consumers have high and diverse expectations when it comes to their food. And their expectations translate into truly demanding requirements for food producers, processors and sellers: they have to keep pace with a continually growing and changing body of laws, stay in tune with the latest research, recognise emerging consumer trends – and compete in today’s tough European and global business environments, always mindful of their responsibility for their many employees, more than five million of whom work in Germany alone. To be able to meet all of these requirements, the food sector needs competent support.

The BLL – the German Federation for Food Law and Food Science (Bund für Lebensmittelrecht und Lebensmittelkunde e. V.) is the leading association of the German food sector. In this role, it represents the food sector throughout the entire production chain, “from farm to fork“. Its membership includes some 90 associations, representing the areas of agriculture, food trades, food industry and food sellers; 100 individual members and 300 companies – – ranging from midsized firms to international corporations.

The BLL deals with a wide range of issues and areas, all of which fall under the somewhat abstract and general terms “food law“ and “food science“. Examples of more specific relevant topic areas include food safety, hygiene, labelling, health claims, additives, genetic engineering, quality assurance, food supplements and organic foods.

In the BLL’s Berlin and Brussels offices, lawyers and scientists work together interdisciplinarily. With the support of such experts, the BLL is able to deal with complex food issues competently and comprehensively.

To ensure that it is always up to date, the BLL maintains numerous information channels, on the national, European and international levels, and it cultivates contacts to policy-makers, government agencies and authorities, scientific institutes, companies and other associations. Furthermore, the BLL is supported in its work by a scientific advisory board, which is organised into “food law“ and “natural sciences” sections.
